You drink your water. You carry the giant emotional-support water bottle. You refill it all day long.
So why does your skin still feel tight, dull, rough, or just… thirsty?
Because when it comes to how to hydrate skin, drinking water is only part of the story.
Your skin has its own moisture barrier designed to hold water where it belongs. And during summer—when heat, sun, sweat, air conditioning, dry air, and wildfire smoke all join the party—that barrier can have a harder time keeping up.
For those of us in North Idaho, Spokane, and the Treasure Valley, this combination is especially familiar. One week you’re dealing with triple-digit temperatures. The next, the sky has that unmistakable smoky haze. Meanwhile, you’re bouncing between outdoor heat and aggressively air-conditioned buildings.
Your body may be getting its eight glasses a day, but your skin might still be asking for more.
The good news? A few smart changes to your routine plus targeted wellness services can help give thirsty summer skin the reset it needs.
First: Does Drinking Water Actually Hydrate Your Skin?
Yes… but there’s an important catch.
Water is essential to your overall health, and being genuinely dehydrated isn’t going to do your skin any favors. But drinking more and more water isn’t necessarily the shortcut to glowing, hydrated skin that social media sometimes makes it out to be.
Think about your skin like a house.
You can have plenty of water available, but if the roof is leaking, you still have a moisture problem.
Your skin’s outermost layer acts as a protective barrier. Part of its job is to hold moisture in and keep outside irritants out. When that barrier isn’t functioning at its best, water escapes more easily from the surface of your skin.
This process is known as transepidermal water loss, or TEWL.
That’s why learning how to hydrate skin isn’t simply about putting more water into your body. It’s also about helping your skin attract, replenish, and retain moisture.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends habits such as moisturizing while the skin is still damp, choosing gentle cleansers, and using creams or ointments with hydrating ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid, such as our Collagenetics Skin-Firming & Age-Defying Care or WellFit Wellness & Skincare Essentials.
In other words: keep drinking your water… just don’t make it do all the work.
Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin: They’re Not the Same Thing
This is where skincare gets interesting.
We often use dry and dehydrated interchangeably, but they aren’t exactly the same.
Dry skin is generally a skin type. It doesn’t produce or retain as much oil, so it may regularly feel rough, flaky, or dry.
Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition in which the skin lacks water. That means someone with naturally oily or combination skin can still have dehydrated skin.
Yes, your face can essentially say, “I’m oily AND thirsty.”
Signs of dehydrated skin may include:
- Tightness, especially after cleansing
- A dull or tired-looking complexion
- More noticeable fine lines
- Rough or uneven texture
- Skin that feels less supple than usual
- Increased sensitivity
- Skin that looks oily but still feels tight underneath
The distinction matters because piling heavy products onto dehydrated skin isn’t necessarily the answer. The goal is to help restore water and support the moisture barrier so your skin can hold onto that hydration.
Why Summer Can Leave Your Skin Extra Thirsty
Summer looks effortless in photos, but your skin may have a different opinion.
Several environmental factors can pile up during the warmer months, creating what we like to think of as the summer dehydration stack.
Heat + Sweat
Sweating is your body’s natural cooling system, but as sweat evaporates, it takes moisture with it. Salt left behind on the skin can also contribute to that dry, tight feeling—especially when you’re sweating repeatedly throughout the day.
Then we shower more frequently to feel fresh, which can become another moisture-stripping cycle if those showers are long and hot.
Air Conditioning
We love you, AC. We really do.
But spending your day moving between hot outdoor air and cool, dry indoor air can be rough on thirsty skin. Lower humidity means moisture can evaporate more easily from the skin’s surface.
If your skin suddenly feels different in July and August than it did in April, your environment could be playing a bigger role than you realize.
Sun Exposure
Outside of your indoor tanning routine in a controlled environment, long summer days mean more opportunities for additional UV exposure, whether you’re at the lake, gardening, hiking, or simply driving around town.
Protecting your skin with broad-spectrum SPF, shade, and protective clothing remains one of the most important steps in a summer skincare routine.
And remember: hydrated-looking skin and protected skin go hand in hand. Your moisturizer cannot replace sunscreen, and your sunscreen shouldn’t replace moisturizer. Your skin wants both.
Then Wildfire Season Arrives
Anyone who has lived through a summer in Idaho or Eastern Washington knows the drill.
You step outside. You smell smoke. You check the AQI. Again.
Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter, including PM2.5, which is small enough to remain suspended in the air and travel long distances. The EPA’s AirNow website is an excellent resource for checking local air quality and wildfire smoke conditions before spending extended time outside.
From a skincare standpoint, smoke and environmental pollution can add another layer of stress. Particles and pollutants can settle on exposed skin, contributing to a complexion that feels dry, irritated, sensitive, or dull.
That makes wildfire season a particularly good time to simplify your skincare routine rather than attacking your skin with more scrubs, acids, and aggressive exfoliation.
After smoky days, gently cleanse your skin, moisturize, and focus on supporting your skin barrier.
Sometimes your skin doesn’t need more stuff… it needs recovery.
How to Hydrate Skin: Think Replenish + Retain
If you’re wondering how to fix dehydrated skin, start by thinking beyond a single moisturizer.
A smart hydration strategy has two jobs:
- Replenish moisture. Humectant ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid help attract water.
- Help keep it there. Emollient and occlusive ingredients help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss.
This is why dermatologists often recommend applying moisturizer when your skin is still slightly damp after cleansing or showering. You’re helping trap some of that water rather than letting it immediately evaporate.
It’s simple, but effective.
Then you can take the same philosophy beyond your bathroom counter.
At Slick Rock Tanning & Spa, we offer several spa and wellness services that make it easy to build a summer skin recovery routine without turning self-care into another item on your never-ending to-do list.
Start With Skin Hydration
If your skin could order its own spa service, this would probably be first.
Our Skin Hydration experience is designed to surround the body in a warm, hydrating environment that helps leave skin feeling softer, smoother, and refreshed.
Think of it as a full-body moisture moment.
It’s an especially satisfying addition to your routine during periods of extreme heat, dry weather, travel, or wildfire season—times when your everyday lotion may feel like it’s working overtime.
And because hydration can also help skin look smoother and more radiant, it’s a great companion to your regular sunless tanning and skincare routine.
Hydrated skin simply looks happy.

Add WellFit for a Full-Body Refresh
Skin hydration is only one piece of feeling refreshed.
WellFit can complement your recovery routine with a wellness-focused experience designed to help you step away from the heat, the smoke, and the general chaos of summer for a little while.
Pairing services also gives you the opportunity to approach your wellness routine differently.
Instead of thinking: What single service should I do?
Think: What does my body need right now?
Maybe it’s hydration. Maybe it’s relaxation. Maybe you simply need an hour when no one is asking you for anything. That counts too.
Give Red Light Therapy a Place in Your Routine
Red light has become one of the biggest conversations in modern wellness and skincare—and for good reason.
Research into red and near-infrared light continues to explore its potential cosmetic benefits for skin appearance, including collagen and overall tone and texture. It’s an area of growing interest, although research continues to evolve.
At Slick Rock, Red Light Therapy—and Medical-Grade Red Light Therapy—makes it easy to incorporate light-based wellness into your regular routine without adding another complicated skincare step at home.
And that’s really the beauty of building a wellness routine around multiple services.
- Skin Hydration addresses the thirsty feeling.
- WellFit adds a restorative wellness component.
- Red Light Therapy rounds out the experience with another technology-forward approach to caring for your skin.
Three different services and one very refreshed you.
What About Infrared Sauna?
There’s a reason sauna sessions feel especially satisfying when life has been running at full speed.
Our HaloIR Infrared Sauna uses infrared warmth to create a relaxing, restorative experience that encourages sweating and gives you dedicated time to unwind.
We don’t think of sauna as a substitute for skin hydration—and you shouldn’t either.
In fact, because you’re sweating, it’s important to drink water before and after your session and moisturize afterward.
Instead, think of our Infrared Sauna as part of the bigger wellness picture: warmth, relaxation, and a chance to disconnect—especially during seasons when heat, smoke, allergens, and environmental stress can leave you feeling depleted.
Paired with hydration and skin-supportive services, it can be a relaxing part of your overall recovery routine.
7 Skin Hydration Tips for Summer
Your spa routine works even better when you support it at home.
1. Moisturize while your skin is still damp.
Don’t wait until you’re completely dry after showering. Pat your skin gently with a towel and apply moisturizer while a little moisture remains.
2. Turn down the shower temperature.
A steaming-hot shower may feel amazing, but very hot water can make already-dry skin feel worse. Keep it warm rather than scorching.
3. Look for proven moisturizing ingredients.
Ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, dimethicone, and petrolatum can help hydrate or support the skin’s moisture barrier.
4. Go easy on exfoliation.
If your skin feels tight, sensitive, or irritated, aggressively scrubbing away at it probably isn’t the solution. Give your barrier some love before reaching for another exfoliant.
5. Cleanse after smoky outdoor days.
You don’t need to scrub. A gentle cleanse can help remove the day’s sweat, sunscreen, dirt, and environmental debris.
6. Use a humidifier.
If your home or office feels exceptionally dry from constant air conditioning, adding humidity to your environment can help. The American Academy of Dermatology includes humidifier use among its recommendations for dry skin.
7. Protect your skin from UV overexposure.
Whether you’re an avid indoor tanner or not, don’t leave your skin high and dry to fend for itself when taking on additional sun exposure during the summer months. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and wear protective clothing when appropriate.
Hydration helps your skin look and feel its best. Sun protection helps protect it. Your skincare routine needs both.
Your Skin Isn’t High-Maintenance. It’s Just Thirsty.
When your skin starts feeling dull, tight, or depleted in the middle of summer, your first instinct may be to drink another glass of water.
Go for it… then give your skin some attention from the outside, too.
Extreme heat, sweat, dry indoor air, and smoky summer conditions can create a perfect storm for dehydrated skin. Instead of waiting until your skin is begging for moisture, build recovery into your routine.
And we’ve made the starting point ridiculously easy.
Start Your Rejuvenation Journey With the Slick Rock Recovery Pass

You can choose any three services, but if you’re looking for the ultimate hydration experience, this is the way to go.
It’s the perfect introduction to creating a wellness routine that goes beyond a bottle of water and a layer of lotion.
